10 Amazing Things To Know About Feldspar

1.

What is Feldspar?

Feldspar is a form of natural occurring Silicate Mineral. Silicate Mineral can be defined as a Mixture of Silicon and Oxygen molecules bonding together to form a Silicate Mineral. The addition of other molecule ions like Aluminum, Sodium, Potassium, Lithium, Calcium, etc., inside silicate minerals, creates Feldspar Mineral.

When pure silicate mineral binds with these molecules, it forms a new structure capable of holding Sodium, Potash Ions, etc. Hence, we find different types and Varieties of Feldspar.

The most common appearance of Feldspar mineral can be found in White or Pink color depending on the molecules that are occupying inside silicate structure.

What are the different Structures of Feldspar?

There are  2 main types of Feldspar Crystalline Structure:

  • Monoclinic
  • Triclinic

A) Monoclinic structure: It can be defined as 3 Dimensional structure with an Unequal measurement of height, width, and depth and any 2 axis(x,y,z axis) are perpendicular to each other.

B) Triclinic Structure: It can be defined as 3 Dimensional structure with an Unequal measurement of height, width, and depth and all 3 axis are not perpendicular to each other.

What are the Physical Properties of Feldspar?

  • Chemical Classification: Silicate
  • Specific Gravity: 2.5 to 2.8
  • Mohs Hardness: 6 – 6.5
  • Luster: Vitreous
  • Melting Point: ~ 1200 Degree C
  • Shrinkage: 9 -14%
  • Color After Firing: Mild range of matte Whiteness or Glossy White or Dark Brown to black shade in Fe-Ti Bonding Feldspar.

Note: For Ceramic use low Iron feldspar is suitable and more Whiteness and brightness after firing is required to manufacture the best products.
